After Cambodia, I played a number of solo shows in Singapore and Malaysia, and did TV/Radio events supporting MTV EXIT and showcasing some of my new material. I couldn’t have been happier about them. I co-hosted 987FM’s ‘Say It With Music’ in Singapore and FlyFM’s ‘Music Revolution’ in Kuala Lumpur, and tested my skillz as a radio DJ. It was pretty fun, I have to say, although I think I’m better suited as a musician. I also played a couple songs, which was great. It was the first time I played “Go For Gold!” live, acoustic on the radio. Pretty exciting, had the whole place singing along and there was even a group of fans that gathered outside the studio and they were singing too.

At my shows, the audiences were singing along to “Go For Gold!” and even dressing in gold, it really was a dream come true to see people reacting to the new music like that, and it isn’t even released yet. I really feel like that is partially a result of working with PledgeMusic because of the behind-the-scenes updates where you’ve had an inside look at the creation of the album as it’s happening. I can’t wait to officially release my album this summer. Here are some fun pics from my show at TAB in Singapore.

While in Kuala Lumpur, I helped FlyFM with their Wishing Tree Charity Event benefitting four local orphanages. Such a great cause and I was super excited to have all of these kids singing along to Go For Gold!

Next up on the schedule for me is some writing time to finish a few songs that are almost done, and then go in to record the rest of my Album. It’s releasing this summer, and I’m freaking out. The songs are so fun, it’s a new thing for me and I’m trying a lot of new techniques across the board. It’s been a truly creative and freeing experience so far, can’t wait to continue and get it finished and out to you.

Right after finishing Go For Gold! in December, I went on a month-long trip to Asia where I was performing and promoting my upcoming solo album, all while spreading the word about MTV EXIT (http://www.mtvexit.org) and human trafficking.

First, I flew to Phnom Penh, Cambodia and did a show with The Click Five for over 40,000 people (whoa!) to support MTV EXIT. Our song “Don’t Let Me Go” has since gone to #2 in Cambodia for top radio songs of 2012, and the Music Vid for the song has passed 1.2 Million views on YouTube (!)

While in Cambodia, we visited 2 shelters. The first was called “Friends”, (http://www.friends-international.org) which is like a safe haven for young people in Cambodia who don’t have anywhere else to go. Like a Boys & Girls Club, but way more. First of all, as soon as we got there, we had kids crawling all over us in excitement. I’m pretty sure I ended up with a young boy on my shoulders and I had nothing to do with putting him up there. I think they were really surprised by how tall we all were.

The kids were there to learn, play, and create, and then ultimately acquire the skills to get a job that can support them / their families. There was a ton of energy there, all positive. Looking to the future, not the past. We were “ChildSafe Trained”, which means we were taken through the proper steps for dealing with a young child who is asking for money or asking you to buy something. We learned that it’s not a good thing to give them money or buy their items. You may think you’re helping them, but ultimately that money is not going to them. It could be part of a larger organization. We then took a tour of the facility where we saw the classrooms and workshops where the kids learn and create.

After the tour of the grounds, we set up to play a short acoustic set, using no amplification, sitting on colorfully painted wooden benches. We had to reconfigure a few times because we were worried we’d break the benches with all 5 of us sitting on them at once. They were small benches. Finally we got it all set up and the MTV crew that was there filming got set up to capture our performance for a documentary series, and got a single mic set up to record the unplugged nature of our performance. We started playing but the clapping and excitement of the 400 kids was much (MUCH) louder than anything we were doing, which was very evident and funny during the set. It made it that much more fun for us, and the kids still loved it, even though they couldn’t really hear us. Check out the Friends blog for pics of our visit.

Next we visited a shelter for victims of human trafficking, specifically young girls who had gone through sex trafficking, which is a scenario where they are prisoners in a brothel, cannot leave, and are forced to have sex with men who are paying for it. Sometimes the girls would have 15 “clients” per day and were heavily sedated. These girls have now been rescued from these brothels and live in a shelter called Dream Home that is run by “Transitions” (http://transitionsglobal.org) and are going through the process of regaining the strength to enter everyday life again. They are by far the bravest people I’ve met in my life, and are still so young. most of them were under 25. Again at this shelter, the vibe was light, cheerful, and everyone was happy to have us there. We sat and had a conversation with 3 of the girls and learned what they wanted to do with their lives moving forward and two of the girls wanted to go into social work and help others. The third was a talented artist. They were all eager to give us friendship bracelets that they made, and show us their artwork and teach us Khmer (Traditional Cambodian) language and phrases, which I then used on stage in front of the crazed 40,000 people the next night. A simple “Thank You” translates to ‘awkunh’ which made the crowd go wild. Thanks to the girls at “Transitions” for the lesson. Check out Transitions’ Facebook album for pics.

The visits to “Friends” and “Transitions” absolutely changed my life and I feel like I grew up a few years having been there. It made me realize how amazing my life is and how fortunate I am to have grown up in a great family, great environment, have the means to do pretty much every activity I wanted, and learn at the best institutions. It further made me realize that I also don’t have real problems. Of course it’s all in the eye of the beholder, and my life gets hard sometimes, but compared to what these young people had been through it’s not even close, not even in the same realm or on the same graph. They’ve seen the darkest of dark and if I can have a part in helping them forget that, even if it’s only for the three and a half minutes I’m playing a song for them, that’s a plus in my book and does make a difference.

Since my last post, I went into the studio in NYC and recorded the leading track for my upcoming album entitled “Go For Gold!”. It sounds so great; I cannot wait for you to hear it. I did it completely independently with two of my best friends producing (Ben Romans and Jared Scharff) and worked in a few different studios in New York. Even though it was done in an “indie” way, there is nothing indie about the song. I wrote it and recorded it having the vision of a big pop song. An Anthem if you will. The goal for the song is to get it placed in the London Olympics this year, and of course I want to perform it there. If any of you have ideas/contacts regarding the Olympics let me know. Hi Everyone! I hope your summer is going really well. It’s so hot in NYC, but I love it. I grew up in GA (Hotlanta!) so I’m used to it.

I’ve been busy writing some super high-energy music for my new solo album and can’t wait for you to hear it. MTV EXIT, which stands for End Exploitation and Trafficking, is a campaign to raise awareness and increase prevention of human trafficking. The issue of prostitution and forced labor is a worldwide issue, and MTV has put together a program to raise awareness through concerts and documentaries. With MTV EXIT, my band The Click Five has performed 2 shows in Cambodia (one of which we were the first band ever to play at the historic Angkor Wat temple near Siem Reap), 1 show in Bangkok, Thailand, and a show in HCMC Vietnam, all of which were fantastic shows and crowds; in Vietnam, a country we’ve never been to before, there were 18,000 eager music lovers at the show… mind-blowing!

Another highlight in Cambodia was our visit to the Somaly Mam shelter where we heard stories of trafficking right from the victims, which really put my life into perspective, and again realized the great things we all have. I was speechless. We played acoustically for them, which our song “Don’t Let Me Go” brought everyone to tears, even though they did not speak english. They also sang pitch perfect renditions of Cambodian national songs, which brought us to tears. They were so talented it was breathtaking. You can see the music video we did in partnership with MTV EXIT for the song “Don’t Let Me Go” below.

It looks like we’re going back to Cambodia to perform another big concert in December as well, so we’re beyond excited to continue supporting this cause, and the fact that we can use our music to do so is amazing.

How this plays in with my PledgeMusic campaign is: A portion of your pledge goes to MTV EXIT, and they are going to be directing that money to organizations just like the shelter I visited in Cambodia, to aid in keeping the shelters running and keeping resources available to rescue victims of trafficking. This could be anything from food to clothing to supplies for classrooms where the victims learn everyday tasks and jobs, as most of them were taken into trafficking at a young age and have never had any schooling. It could also mean money going towards keeping the lights on at the shelters.

By making a pledge, you are doing way more than you think. Each pledge is giving life to a victim of human trafficking who thought a normal life was not possible.
